Tracy and I attended the same high school - we were Toms River East Raiders, Class of '95. We lost touch after graduation. Thirteen years later, Tracy contacted me to be photographed. The wig, the make-up, the transgender slant - I couldn't explain the absurdity of it if I tried, it's just where I went with it.

She said she was up for anything.
Sabrina was originally street cast for an advertising job I was shooting. I didn't have time to meet any of the models we were working with prior to the start of the shoot-day, so before any of us were introduced to Sabrina, she entered our location vehicle screaming unprovoked about how cool it would be to party and take her clothes off with complete strangers. Her behavior was fairly surprising and refreshingly careless, and loud - much in the same way a square would imagine how a squatter in the Village behaves; she looked disheveled and sounded scattered, and I loved it.

I asked if she would come by the studio for a sitting after we wrapped. At 11pm that evening she arrived still talking loudly about strangers, still worried about how she looked in (and out of) her clothes.

That evening, (Leslie Lessin and) I learned Sabrina’s a runaway, a lesbian, a reformed drug-addict, a manic depressive and one of the most interestingly real and honest subjects I’ve ever photographed. Too bad she gave us an old address, fake ID and disconnected phone number.
